Clinical Experiences on Sulbenicillin for Stubborn Surgical Infections

Abstract
Sulbenicillin is a new semisynthetic penicillin with a broad spectrum of activity against gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. Sulbenicillin is very similar in chemical structure and antibacterial activity to ampicillin and carbenicillin. (sulfonyl group instead of the amino group in ampicillin or the carboxyl group in Carbenicillin) This compound has a broad antibacterial spectrum comparable to
that of ampicillin. In addition, it is effective, like Carbenicillin, against Pseudomonas and Proteus group. It has been found that the compound is effective even against staphylococci which are moderately resistant to penicillin G. Sulbenicillin is also comparable to other penicillins in its extremely low toxicity.
In our department, Sulbenicillin was administered for stubborn surgical infections which was treated with other antibiotics unsucessfully. Isolated organisms are 12 Pseudomonas, 8 E. coli, 1 Paracolon, 1 Staph. and 1 Streptococci. Existing diseases are 5 sepsis, 6 severe peritoneal infections, 1 liver abscess, 1 pancreatic abscess, 1 prostatic abscess, 1 suppurative cholangitis, 3 bleeders with heavy contamination and others.
Among 23 patients, excellent results were observed in 8 patients, 13 fair, and 2 poor. (see text). Results of clinical trial and summary of pharmacologic action and fates are presented.
